The men’s and women’s teams both fell to St. Bonaventure last Friday in the last meet of the fall season, with the men losing, 150-87, and the women losing 162.5-80.5.
The defeat marked the second weekend in a row that both the men’s and women’s teams lost. The last time both teams lost in the same weekend came Oct. 18 against Marist.
On the women’s diving side, senior Vinnie Costanzo placed second in the 1-meter dive with a score of 221.32 and fourth in the 4-meter event with a score of 222.52. Fellow senior Gianna Corneila also had a strong afternoon as she finished third in the 1-meter (213.07) and 3-meter (231.22) events.
The lone swimmer on the women’s side to take home first place honor was junior Ashlynn Gilfillan who clocked in with a time of 53.75 seconds which was almost a full second faster than the second place finisher. Gilfillan also took home second place in the 200-yard freestyle event.
Freshman Grace VanBuren also put together a strong performance as she finished second in the 50-yard free and third in the 100-yard fly.
For the men, sophomore Liam O’Connell dominated the day, sweeping all of his events by winning 1,000, 200, and 500-freestyle events. Senior Kenyon Winkky and junior Lucas Kennedy took home first place medals of their own in the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard breaststroke, respectively.
The meet was the team’s last of the fall as they will begin to prepare to take on Big 4 rival Niagara on Jan. 17 at the Burt Flickinger Center on the campus of Erie Community College. The meet is scheduled to start at 12 p.m.
