The Griffs had another strong week as the team won both of their matches.

On Saturday, Canisius made a stand against St. Peter’s, sweeping them in three sets. They took the first set 25-20 and followed that up with a 25-9 win, then closed out the match with another 25-20 win. Leah Simmons dominated the match, posting a record-setting .727 kill percentage for Canisius. This gave Simmons 18 kills, and she also posted two blocks. Camille Vanleer gave the Griffs seven kills in the effort, as well.

When head coach Lenika Vazquez was asked if she thought the team’s performance to this point was an indicator of the team’s performance for the rest of the year, she said, “After these next two weekends, I’ll be able to completely answer that question, because I’ll have gotten a look at every team once. I think so far, so good. I think the girls have stepped up to every challenge we’ve had within the conference. Now it’s just a matter of getting through the first round.”

Canisius will have faced all members of the MAAC conference after next weekend, and they will be going into next weekend undefeated within the conference.

To follow up the performance against St. Peter’s, the Blue and Gold hosted the Rider Broncs. The game was a marathon, as the teams took it to five sets. The Griffs started hot with a 25-17 win in set one. Rider punched back in set two with a 23-25 victory. They continued that success into set three, defeating Canisius 15-25. The Griffs came back strong and closed out the match, claiming set four 25-21 and set five 15-10. Hannah Nelson posted a career-high 22 kills, alongside 10 digs and three aces. Leah Simmons put up 16 kills in the five set barnburner.

“I was glad to see our ability to finish in close games last weekend, and I hope it will remain consistent throughout the rest of the season,” Vazquez said.

Including preseason play, the volleyball team is 3-2 in games that have gone to five sets. They continue to play well in five set matches, and they showed that ability this past weekend.

This coming weekend, the Canisius volleyball team will be on the road. The first game will be in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. as the Griffs take on the Marist Red Foxes at 1 p.m. on Saturday at McCann Arena. On the season, the Red Foxes are 4-2 in conference play.

Sunday, the Griffs travel to Loudonville, N.Y. to take on the Siena Saints at 1 p.m. at the Marcelle Athletic Conference. The Saints are 2-3 in league play to this point.
